LOCAL TIP! Grab seats on the left side of the train (3 seater section) for the best mountain views up and down the Cog. For the ambitious, race up Pikes Peak Ascent with amateurs and professionals alike. There is a lottery registration each March for race entry.

One of our favorite things do with family in Colorado Springs was head here on a cold winter day. We’d create a fun scavenger hunt based on the exhibits. On free museum days, it gave us a fun time together and exhausted some of that pented up energy winter brings!

8. Step Back Into the Olden Days at the Pioneer Museum (free)
The Pioneer Museum, located in the center of downtown Colorado Springs, showcases the history of this beautiful mountain town. Learn about the tuberculosis patients who flocked here for health. Did you know many of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo animals came from Spencer Penrose?

In the summer months, the Pioneer Museum Square just off Tejon Street is home to Food Truck Tuesdays. Grab a bite to eat from one of the many local food trucks. Open Tuesdays from June to August, you have a choice of vegan bomb fries and homemade tacos to fingerlick’ bbq.
This entire area is easily accessible on foot. Park in one of the large city parking garages and enjoy wandering the streets. CoHH favorite things to do in Colorado Springs summer months always includes at least one visit to the local farmers market. We love buying from Colorado residents, giving back to our favorite city.
Local farmers market are held weekly featuring CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) like Ahava Farms and local artisans. Typically Colorado Springs Farmers markets start end of May, wrapping up for the season by late October.

18. Climb Nature’s Staircase - the Manitou Incline (free)
If you like an outdoor challenge, hit the Manitou Incline – a mountain staircase that climbs 2,000 vertical feet in less than a mile!
This Colorado incline hike is rated difficult and for good reason! Starting at 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) and ending at 8,590 feet (2,620 meters), the Incline is an almost straight shot of about 2,750 steps.
For those wondering just how long is Manitou Incline in miles - that would be 0.9 miles!

21. Biking Trails (free)
While not as biker friendly as Fort Collins, Colorado Springs has expanded biking trails and adventure parks for the public. There are dozens of paved walking paths throughout Colorado Springs. Nine of the best biking paths double as stroller friendly trails.
Completely volunteer funded and maintained, Goose Gossage Park’s moguls, ramps and trails provide hours of fun for kids and grownups alike. El Pomar Youth Bike Park in Fountain has a large bike park as well, giving the rider ample opportunities to nail those jumps.

Downtown Old Bike Shop and north end’s Criterium Bike Shop are great places to ask where to go Colorado Springs bike trails. Catch a ride or two at the North Pole Amusement Park.
One of Melody’s favorite family friendly things to do in Colorado Springs when her kids were little was hit up the North Pole Amusement Park. About 20 minutes from Colorado Springs south end, this vintage kids amusement park sits at the base of Pikes Peak Mountain.
Kids and adults love the simple carnival type rides, mini roller coasters and a large ferris wheel. Of course, you can’t go to the North Pole without a visit with Santa Claus.
While many of the park’s rides are for younger children, it is a fun place for all ages. Enjoy a lemonade while looking at the views from high up top the ferris wheel.
LOCAL TIP! Keep everyone well hydrated and fed - this park sits at 7,500’ elevation. Plan on a full day here. You’ll need to bring snacks and water (allowed). It’s built into a hill so you’ll be needing those hiking shoes as well.
