As National Park pass holders, we were immediately caught by the title. Extreme Adventure rescues? Yep! That’s our kind of outdoor adventure book.
And Kevin did not disappoint our high expectations for excitement and thrill in this memoir.
Disappointment over a dream on hold begins Kevin’s journey, detouring him to a lifelong career as a National Park paramedic.
Wild Rescues is Kevin’s firsthand experiences and stories of taking care of the thousands of visitors to Yellowstone, Glacier and Grand Teton National Parks.
Kevin weaves in fascinating Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Grand Teton National Park facts while telling sordid stories of life, love, fear, hope and sometimes despair.
You’ll soon find yourself steeped in National Park lingo as you search for lost hikers. BOLO - Be On the Lookout - happens more than you think. Zofran and Versed have a prominent place in rescues as does the wilderness rescue mantra “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.”
By the time the book ends, you’ll feel like an EMT yourself, having gone through hair raising rescues. Kevin’s narratives draw you into each story. You’ll find yourself immersed in the emotion of each dramatic rescue.
He doesn’t downplay the hard and sad; sharing the grief of teammate’s suicide and rock-climbing escapades that end in death. Yet his stories of hope and joy dominate the book, making you so thankful for these brave men and women who care for the outdoor adventurer.
Wild Rescues can be read in chunks, the book sectioned into three parts. You’ll feel inspired to head to the trails and hike. I dare say this book will cause you to say thank you to any park officials and EMTs met along the trail.
