HOW TO GET THERE:
Colorado Mountain College | 901 South Highway 24 | Leadville, CO 80461
The trailhead is at the top of the hill on County Road 41. Turn left at the top of the hill, and you’ll see the trailhead sign. You can also park along the sides of County Road 41 or in the Mineral Belt Trail parking lot.

*If you're starting a little later in the day, we love following the disc golf course route—it’s a fun and easy way to log about 5 relatively flat miles.
Many of the best winter hikes in Colorado for snowshoes start near the Dutch Henry tubing hill.
Trust me, even with a flat route, the snowshoeing still gave us a good workout! Leadville Colorado hiking at high elevation definitely requires gaiters, a sense of adventure, and plenty of patience with the snow.
The pine trees, fresh powder, and unmarked trails add to the charm—but if we’d spent a bit more time with the map, we would’ve kept the route closer to 4 miles. Keep in mind, these trails are mountain bike trails in summer, but they’re just as fun to explore in winter.
From the Dutch Henry Tubing Hill, you might spot a group of high schoolers gliding past on cross-country skis—just one of the many ways locals enjoy Leadville winter activities!

Mineral Belt Trail - the route we went
The Mineral Belt Trail runs in a loop around Leadville, Colorado. You can pick up the trail in several spots. We followed the directions from AllTrails and parked alongside the road just off Elm Street.
Trail Details
When you head out on this trail, you can start in either direction—choose whichever suits you best! On our snowy day, we went clockwise after spotting the trail first.
The route is wide, well-marked, and hard to miss, so you can feel confident navigating it on your Leadville winter adventure.
This 11-mile Leadville Colorado hiking trail is a true community effort.
Built in 1994 by a dedicated group, the trail connects to three historic railroad lines from Leadville’s Mining District. Along the way, you’ll find historical signs that reveal fascinating tidbits about the area’s past.
You’d definitely want to take the time to read them all!
NOTE! The entire 11.6-mile trail, with a 750' elevation gain, is ADA-friendly, making it accessible for everyone.

Turquoise Lake:
This is a 14 mile loop multi use trail. Motorized winter recreation (serious words for “snow machines” are allowed on this trail). Probably best explored during the week. The elevation map is fairly consistent with lake side walking. Hills are not an issue with this. Sounds like perfect snowshoe trails in Colorado!
East Side Mining District:
Two loop trails - Evansville and Stumptown - are groomed county roads. Evansville is right around 4 miles while Stumptown is slightly less at 3 1/2 miles. Both trails have mountain views and are multi-use.
Mt. Massive Golf Course Ski and Snowshoe Trails:
These 17 km of free Colorado winter hikes(kind of - they suggest a $10 donation) are in the golf course. These trails boast views of fourteeners, Mt. Elbert and Mt Massive. The sky’s the limit on this trail system. Decide to do out and back routes or stick to flat loops. Bonus? Grab a post hike drink at the clubhouse.

Leadville Train Ride
The Leadville Train Ride is on our must-do list this year!
Leaving from 326 E 7th St in Leadville, CO, this 2.5-hour scenic ride takes you up to 10,000 feet with killer views of Colorado’s tallest peaks, the headwaters of the Arkansas River, and the San Isabel National Forest.
It runs daily from Memorial Day weekend through September, with weekly rides from October through April—so if you’re looking for fun Leadville winter activities, this is a solid pick.
Tickets start around $80, and there are no assigned seats, so grab a good spot early. The main train area isn’t heated, but you can bring your own food and drinks or snag a snack onboard.
Restrooms are available, and reservations are required for September and December. The 37th season kicks off May 24, 2025—who’s in?
How to Get to Leadville
Leadville is 127 miles from Colorado Springs. Heading on US 24 W, stay on the highway until 285 S. Maps are wonderful tools for directions.
Follow the directions and you’ll be soon driving on main road, right through Leadville.
Average Temperatures in the Winter
Leadville winter hikes are chilly. Average temperatures hover around freezing (32°F December - March). Daylight is also at a premium, sunrise around 7 am with the sun setting no later than 5pm. The best chance for fresh powder is March and April.

PRO NOTE! If you are a last minute shopper like us, stay on their website. Someone always seems to bail on their appointment. While you’re there, pick up a beanie. It is probably the single most favorite hat I’ve purchased in years. Warm enough for winter hikes and perfect for summer fourteener hiking.
Located by Colorado Mountain College, this unique outdoor gear rental store. Annual memberships start at $90/year, giving residents access to essential hiking gear and snowsport equipment. In a nutshell, “check out” the items, returning them as you would a book at the local library. It’s for local residents unable to purchase gear.

In you’re in search of hot soup, WIFI and a place to hang for a few hours, City on the Hill checks all the boxes. Freshly made soup and homemade bread is the perfect lunch to fuel before wrapping up work projects.
With several tables to sit, you’re bound to find one open.
Chai and lattes are excellent, as are their baked cookies. (Made daily, the baked goods are outstanding!) We loved the local scene, spotting moms pop in with their snowsuited kiddos for a coffee and cookie.
A great vibe and super welcoming, the tone is the perfect set up for a great weekend! Bonus points for strong WIFI signals and tables big enough for food and a computer.

Family owned and operated, Treeline opened in 2017. It’s a whole family affair with husband and wife owners running the restaurant with their three kids pitching in.
A favorite hobby of ours is ordering our server’s favorite meal in the restaurant. The meal we had that night did not disappoint. Choosing to sample several items on the menu, each dish was better than the first!
The menu rotates depending on season. Head in with an open mind, big appetite and try it all!
