The Natural Beauty of Conundrum Hot Springs

Discovered deep within the Rocky Mountains, Conundrum Hot Springs is a true natural wonder in the middle of a wonderful alpine environment.

This summer we marveled at towering peaks, lush forests, rushing creeks, and sublime meadows while on our Conundrum hot springs hike.

On our bucket list for several summers, we booked permits for the last week of June, fingers crossed that there wouldn’t be too much snow! I’m happy to report that while we did experience a few small patches of snow, crossing creeks was manageable and we had great weather.

The Conundrum Hot Springs themselves are the result of geothermal activity deep within the earth, creating an oasis of pools — three of them to be exact. The largest pool was a comfy 102 degrees and we stayed put for over two hours, soaking in the views while sipping on the beers we had just carried up the hill.

After hiking 8.4 miles and climbing nearly 2,800’ in elevation, we finally arrived to the hot springs; we were so relieved to find everyone wearing swimsuits, knowing it was a gamble.

We quickly set up our tents at our designated campsite #1 and changed into our swimsuits. Tucking our our Turkish towels away in a nearby bush, the wildflowers and the sound of the nearby creek added to the dreamy scene as we slipped into the water, with our Colorado beers in hand.

Ahhhhhh.

Conundrum Hot Springs themselves are a true marvel of nature inviting visitors to soak and unwind. It's no wonder these Colorado hot springs are a bucket list hiking destination for those looking for a quick and unforgettable backcountry overnight trip.

We aim to give you all the good intel! Let’s unpack the details of the hike and how to secure a permit to hike to Conundrum Hot Springs.

Hiking to Conundrum Hot Springs from Aspen

The journey to Conundrum Hot Springs is a beautiful experience on the way to a stunning destination itself.

While parts of this backpacking hike is challenging — fording creeks, balancing on log bridges, and a steep, rocky incline at the end — you will be rewarded with eye-candy throughout as you’re hiking up through the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness.

And let’s not forget, this trip takes some planning beforehand! From securing your camping permits months in advance, to packing all the right things in your big ole’ backpack, we’re here to give you the full scoop.

Permit required for camping at Conundrum Hot Springs and you must reserve in advance online as spots are limited.

Theoretically, if you are trained up, fit, and ready to go, you could do the Conundrum Hot Springs hike all in one day. BUT, you would be rushed for time to soak in the hot springs, especially if summer thunderstorms loom overhead.

Camping overnight at Conundrum affords you a lot more time to enjoy a good long soak in the hot springs during different times of the day. You can soak in the afternoon, at night, and even at sunrise before you head back down the valley.

We began our hike on a moody, overcast day — thankful for shade! We had some sprinkles here and there, and some rain overnight, but nothing we couldn’t handle without the right gear. More on what we packed, down below.

Conundrum Hot Springs Trail overview

TRAIL DETAILS: This is a very challenging 16.9 miles out and back hike that climbs 2,788 feet in elevation. topping out at 11,266 feet, be aware of how your body responds to altitude.

The Conundrum trailhead is located in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, a protected area known for its rugged beauty and abundant wildlife.

At the trailhead, be sure to read all the informational signs AND grab a disposable poop bag or two, for each hiker in your group. These are so easy to use, if you haven’t already tried pooping in a bag. They come with full instructions. Remember: what you pack in, you must pack out — that means your poop too.

PRO TIP: Don’t forget to leave a map, highlighting where you’re going, on the seat of your car. List the full names of people in your group, your hiking route and plan, emergency contacts, the date you started out on the trail, as well as the date and time you hope to return by. This is helpful to rangers, should anything go wrong for your group in the backcountry. Also, communicate your entire plan to someone back home.

The hike itself begins with a gentle ascent through lush, forested terrain, where the sound of Conundrum Creek lulls you up the valley. As you continue your gradual climb, you’ll take in picture-worthy vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

The trail continues to weave through alpine meadows, with so many different, bright wildflowers flanking the trail. Give the honeybees their space and enjoy watching them work.

The Conundrum Hot Springs hikes treats you to endless marvelous views of the Maroon Bells, a pair of iconic 14,000-foot peaks that tend to be Colorado’s trademark postcard mountains.

You’ll have several creek and log bridge crossings, with one wide creek crossing. You’ll want to take off your hiking boots and put on Chacos or Tevas for crossing Conundrum Creek.

The creek may be up to your thigh. Remember to unclip your pack and loosen the straps before you wade in. Should you fall in the water, a loose pack is way easier to slip out of, making it less likely to drag you downstream.

Over the last couple of miles, the trail then becomes a bit steeper through a series of switchbacks, testing your endurance as you carry your overnight pack up the mountain. My pack weighed about 30 pounds.

COHH PRO TIP: Your backpack should weigh 25% or less of your own body weight. Remember you will be carrying it over 8.9 miles, so likely for 5 hours or so. Share as many items as you can!

As you near the hot springs, you’ll notice signage indicating you’re in permitted camping zones. You’re almost there!

While the landscape becomes more rugged and steep, the rocky trail also becomes more challenging. But the reward at the end of your trek is well worth the effort.

Before you know it, we were slipping into the soothing, mineral-rich waters of the hot springs, beer in hand, surrounded by the majestic peaks and the soothing sounds of nature. This day was truly an unforgettable experience.

Alternative Route to Conundrum Hot Springs

My friend and I plan to hike to Conundrum Hot Springs again, but next time we aim to begin from Crested Butte with our teenage sons and we’ll make it a two-night backpacking overnight.

Consider this sweet alternative that does not require a Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Overnight Permit: From Crested Butte, hike 4.3 miles from the Judd Falls trailhead to Copper Lake. Camp overnight in a designated campsite at Copper Lake, then take a out-and-back 8.8 mile day hike from Copper Lake up to Conundrum Hot Springs. Once you’ve come back from the hot springs, camp a second night at Copper Lake. Wrap up your trip by heading back out to Judd Falls trailhead the next day.

Your total hiking trip will be 17.5 miles with an elevation gain for 5,165 feet, but you will have only carried your overnight backpack up about 1200’ before dropping at your campsite. You can carry a light daypack up to Conundrum.
