Iron Mountain Hot Springs

After a morning hike on the Hanging Lake Trail, we spent about four hours at Iron Mountain Hot Springs, mostly in the peaceful adults-only section. With 32 pools at different temperatures (98 - 108 degrees), it was easy to relax and unwind.

Even on a Saturday, it wasn’t crowded, making for perfect conversation.

We sipped cocktails from the on-site bar while soaking in the mineral-rich waters, all in a clean, well-maintained space with updated decor that made the whole experience feel extra relaxing.

If you’re looking for the ultimate hot springs winter experience, this is the place—especially in soaking in these hot springs in December, when the snowy scenery makes it even more magical.

PRO TIP! Your ticket includes two towels, but they’re not super fluffy. Bringing an extra for post-hot-springs showers was a win for us!

Yampah Hot Springs

What Are the Yampah Hot Springs, and Are They Worth It?

Yampah Hot Springs is a totally different vibe from Iron Mountain, but just as memorable. We were surprised by how humid the vapor caves were—hot and sticky, but also super interesting!

The caves are small, so you move in and out of them, soaking in the steam and letting it work its magic.

It's one of the only known natural vapor caves in North America, and though it feels like you're entering a sketchy basement, it's well worth the effort!

The caves harness heat from Yampah Spring's mineral-rich waters and have been a wellness destination for over a century, offering a unique opportunity to sweat out toxins and stress in a tranquil, underground environment.

PRO TIP! Flip flops are key here. The rocky ground is a tad slippery.

The soaking tub for two is an extra-large jetted tub enhanced with soothing essential oils, making it the perfect way to relax after spending a snowy day outdoors.

When it comes to enjoying the many winter hot springs Colorado has, this serene retreat is hard to beat.

We also treated ourselves to some spa treatments (just a heads up, this is for those 18 and older), which were amazing and exactly what we needed after a long day of exploring.

While Iron Mountain has that peaceful, laid-back atmosphere with stunning views, Yampah Hot Springs offers something more intimate and unique with its underground steam experience.

Both spots have their own charm, but if you're looking for a truly relaxing, almost mystical experience, Yampah Hot Springs' vapor caves are a must-see!

At least two towels (we love using LAEK towels—they’re soft and absorbent)
Water bottle to stay hydrated *all places have filtered water for refills
Lotion for afterward (the mineral waters can be drying)

If you’re a First-time to the Hot Springs in Glenwood:

Take it slow! Don’t stay in the hot water for too long, especially in colder weather
Be mindful of the temperature difference when getting in and out of the pools
Alcohol can amplify the effects of heat, so if you plan to indulge, be extra cautious
The combination of altitude and heat can be challenging, so stay hydrated and listen to your body

Yes, you can definitely hike here in during winter! The trails are beautiful under a blanket of snow, offering peaceful solitude and stunning views.

Our two favorite hiking areas are within minutes of Glenwood Hot Springs in Colorado.

Hike to Hanging Lake in Winter

Hiking to Hanging Lake is nothing short of magical, especially in the snow. But fair warning—it’s a steep climb, and the snowy conditions can make it tricky.

My Osprey backpack goes on every hike I take!

A permit is required to hike the trail, but don’t stress; it’s an easy process to snag one.

Trust me, trekking poles are a must on this hike—the elevation gain is no joke, and the snow adds an extra challenge.

We brought traction devices (Kahtoola spikes are my favorite!), and they were lifesavers on the icy patches, especially during that final ascent to the lake. If you’re hitting the trail early after fresh snow, snowshoes might be worth considering.

One of our favorite stops along the way was Spouting Rock. In winter, it’s like walking into a real-life ice castle, complete with frozen waterfalls—it’s breathtaking!

This popular summer hike features a well-marked route, but winter snow turns it into an exciting challenge. If you're arriving early after fresh snow, download a map app—the trail can be tricky to find without tracks from other hikers.

2025 Hanging Lake Trail Update

The Hanging Lake Trail in Glenwood Canyon is currently closed for a major restoration project. After battling damage from the Grizzly Creek Fire, mudslides, and intense rainstorms, the trail needed some serious TLC.

The repairs include replacing bridges, building a boardwalk at Spouting Rock (can’t wait to see this!), revamping the trailhead and parking area, and replanting native vegetation to control erosion.

Construction will start back up in the spring of 2025 when the weather warms, and the trail is expected to reopen in the summer.

So, while you’ll have to wait a bit to visit this gem again, it’s exciting to know the improvements will make Hanging Lake even more spectacular when it’s back!

How to Get to Hanging Lake

From the I-70 rest stop parking lot, the hike to Hanging Lake begins on a paved path along the Colorado River before winding through the forest and climbing alongside Dead Horse Creek through a rocky canyon.

Winter permits through April 30th are $10 per hiker and include self parking at the trailhead.

NOTE: This hiking trail is not maintained in winter and can be hazardous. Use at your own risk and be prepared for winter hiking conditions, including inclement weather, cold temperatures, snow and ice.

Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area hikes

The Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area offers a ton of great hiking options, and it's a favorite spot for locals and their dogs. Just a quick 15-minute drive from Glenwood Springs, you’ll find plenty of parking at the trailhead.

Red Hill Outer Loop and Mushroom Rock Trails

9+ miles | Loop Trail

With 12 trails in the Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area, it’s an ideal spot for exploring. Whether you're tackling the Red Hill Outer Loop or trying another trail, the area has it all.

Its easy access from Carbondale and the stunning views of Mt. Sopris make it a local favorite and a great way to enjoy some solitude in nature.

One hike you won’t want to miss is the Red Hill Outer Loop, an 8-mile trail that can be extended with the 1.2-mile Mushroom Rock option. The views from this hike are absolutely stunning, especially looking out at Mt. Sopris, but be ready for a good workout—there’s plenty of uphill!

If you’re hiking in the spring, be prepared for some muddy sections—gaiters are a must to keep your pants from turning red.

The best part?

We had the trail mostly to ourselves, only crossing paths with two other hikers the whole time.

This hike is pretty exposed, so be mindful of the weather and wind, and don’t forget sunscreen—the higher elevation can catch you off guard.

PRO TIP! Head to the Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area site for trail map information. The routes are very well marked. Be aware that most trails are shared with bikers! This isn’t as much of an issue in winter.

How to Get to Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area

To get to the Red Hill Special Recreation Management Area from Glenwood Springs, head south on Highway 82 for about 4 miles. Turn left onto County Road 117, which is just before you reach the town of Carbondale. Follow the road for about 2 miles, and you'll find the parking area for the Red Hill trailhead on your left.Gorgeous vistas.

For a bit of luxury, head to Beaver Creek Resort, about 90 minutes from Glenwood Springs, where you’ll find fantastic slopes and a charming village atmosphere.

If you're in the mood for something sweet, Sweet Coloradough serves up donuts that are absolutely out of this world. Their breakfast burritos are on point!

For a flavorful twist, head to Masala and Curry for some of the best Indian food around.

And next time I'm in town, I'm definitely checking out Riviera Supper Club and Scratch Kitchen, both of which come highly recommended.

The nearest airport is Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), just 40 miles away, with direct flights from bigger cities.

Or, you can fly into Denver (DEN) and enjoy a scenic drive to this mountain gem! You can also take the Amtrak Train from Denver to Glenwood Springs.

Where Should You Stay in Glenwood Springs?

For a more upscale option, consider staying at the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, offering luxurious rooms and stunning views, all just steps from the hot springs.

‘Whether you choose this elegant hotel, the historic Hotel Colorado, or a spacious vacation rental, you'll find the perfect spot to relax and recharge.

With grocery and health food stores in town, you can easily make the most of your weekend retreat.

When we visited the hot springs in December, we stayed near Cooper Avenue, just a short walk from the Indian restaurant, Masala and Curry. We love being able to walk to everything, and this location worked out perfectly for us. It made enjoying the hot springs and exploring town so much easier!
