Beer brewing began in the Land of 10,000 Lakes- Minnesota. This state holds the title for the first craft brewery, August Schell Brewing Company.
Fast forward to 1965 when California wanted to get on the hops train. In 1977, the other Michael Jackson (aka “the Beer Guy”) wrote the world’s best beer book - The World Guide to Beer - kickstarting a nationwide interest in craft beer.
Colorado was poised and ready to jump on the beer bandwagon. In December 1979, they hosted the inaugural Homebrewers Conference in Boulder, CO, catapulting the Centennial State into the beer big leagues.
In May 2006, American Craft Beer Week was added to the calendar. By 2016, over 5,000 breweries were working hard to provide the best beer in Colorado Springs and beyond.
Judge Baldwin’s was Colorado Springs' first microbrewery. Opening a brewpub in conjunction with the Antlers Hilton in 1991, the craft brew scene exploded. While Baldwin's is no longer brewing, the best breweries in Colorado Springs have carried on, showcasing new breweries each year.

The Colorado Brewers Rendezvous gathers in Salida every July for a one-day beer fest, bringing in 75 craft breweries for a few days of beer sampling and two-stepping. Grab a rental and stick around for a few days. In Salida and Buena Vista, you have access to all kinds of hiking, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting adventures.
The fun doesn’t stop once the weather turns cold. Check out the world’s largest commercial beer competition at the Great American Beer Festival held each fall in Boulder.
