Important Tips for Camping in Colorado

  1. Bring your checkbook and cash to pay for firewood and for your site if it’s on a first-come, first-serve basis. Campground hosts do not handle credit card transactions.

  2. Check the weather 24 hours before you go and prepare accordingly.

  3. Tell someone where you’re camping and how long you plan to stay there.

  4. For first-come, first-served campsites, arrive an hour before campground checkout time to grab an open spot — especially on a Friday or Saturday.

  5. Check in with the campground host right away and introduce yourself.

  6. Ask the host if there’s anything you should be aware of about the campground or the surrounding area. For example, any bear activity? Are the water spigots working?

  7. If Bear Lockers are provided, use them.

  8. Always set up your tent on designated tent pads or areas if they exist.

  9. If it’s hot and humid, choose a space with plenty of shade and water. If it’s cold and windy, pick a spot near something that will block the wind and offer some protection.

  10. Watch out for widow-makers! DO NOT camp underneath dead trees or dead tree limbs.

  11. Put your tent and sleeping bag and pad up right away, especially if bad weather might be coming in.

  12. Introduce yourself to your campsite neighbors.

  13. Be considerate to neighbors and observe campground quiet hours.

  14. Buy firewood at the campground so that you don’t bring invasive species with you. Be aware of any fire restrictions.

  15. Camp fires in provided fire rings only and they should always be put DEAD-OUT when you leave your campsite. No exceptions.
