Crested Butte is romantic in summer after the thaw, and hikes are best enjoyed in July through mid September. You’ll discover aspen groves turning gold in September. The ski resort is open November through April, making winter a fabulous time for a romantic couples trip too.
Aspen
Why Aspen is romantic
One of the most romantic vacation spots in Colorado, Aspen has been beckoning hikers and skiers here since the mid 1900s.
But well before then, Aspen was a lucrative silver-mining town, complete with grid-patterned streets, extravagant West End Victorian residences, and cultural landmarks, like the Hotel Jerome and Wheeler Opera House (see Aspen’s History 101 on Aspen Chamber of Commerce page).
Add in the majestic Maroon Bells, one of Colorado’s most photographed mountains, and you’ve got yourself a special couples getaway in summer, fall and winter.
PRO TIP: From Memorial Day through late October or early November, you should drive the thrilling Independence Pass from Twin Lakes into Aspen as a way to kickstart your time away as a couple.

This 3.6-mile round trip trek up to Crater Lake begins from Maroon Lake on a wonderful hike through aspen groves and wildflower meadows before reaching the crystal-clear Crater Lake. NOTE: The lake may dry up by late summer.
Hike Buckskin Pass and enjoy great views of Capitol Peak and Maroon Bells while you take a challenging hike through colorful wildflowers in mid summer.
Catch a gondola ride up to the top of Aspen Mountain.

Buena Vista
Why Buena Vista is romantic
The Collegiate Peaks are visible while walking along historic Main Street or from the hiking and biking trails along the Arkansas River, making Buena Vista romantic any time of year. Snow capped mountains in winter beckon skiiers, while the river beckons whitewater enthusiasts.
There is something to do for every type of romantic outdoorsy couple. Fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, rafting and hot springs can all be found here in Chaffee County. Coupled with great brews, great local restaurants, fun shops, and loads of sunshine, my husband and I often make a bee line for a romantic weekend getaway here in Colorado.

Agnes Vaille Falls Just up the road from Mount Princeton Hot Springs in Buena Vista, Colorado, find the short and sweet hike to Agnes Vaille Falls. This tall waterfall freezes over beautifully in winter. This year-round hike (wear spikes in winter) also provides fantastic views of two fourteeners: Mount Princeton and Mount Antero.
Browns Creek Waterfall This six mile out-and-back rocky hike takes off on a rocky start with fabulous views of Mount Antero, then through pine and aspen forests, followed by a meadow and creek crossings before reaching a wonderfull waterfall.
Interlaken Lake Just 30 minutes from Buena Vista, this easy hike follows the shore of Interlaken Lake leads to an old historic resort. Great in all seasons, makes for an especially beautiful, fun winter hike.
Mount Princeton Hot Springs is an absolute must! My all-time favorite hot springs in Colorado.
In summer, go whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River.

We head to Buena Vista year round. The off season months of April, May, October and November mean fewer crowds downtown and as well as in the hot springs.

Telluride
Why Telluride is romantic
The free gondola ride taking you from Mountain Village down into Telluride is the perfect start to a romantic Colorado getaway.
The first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States, the 12 minute free ride offers picturesque mountain views, as well as access to hiking and biking trails in the summer and ski slopes in the winter.
Colorado Avenue is the main street of Telluride and directs your gaze upwards to mountains and trails leading you on waterfall hikes. Walk the avenue by hand day or night, perusing unique shops, art stores, and wonderful restaurants. Plan ahead and make reservations in summer, especially on the weekends.
Romantic hike and activities
Couples can hop on the free gondola in either Mountain Village or Telluride and ride to the midway point (Station St. Sophia from which hiking, biking and ski trails are accessed) and then continue on to the other side.
For experienced hikers who want a challenge, the Bear Creek Trail is a good pick. Steep and rocky, but offers gorgeous views of alpine tundra covered in wildflowers in the height of summer.
Bridal Veil Falls takes the cake at 365’ tall. While it’s certainly no secret, this very popular Colorado hiking trail is well worth the effort. You’ll enjoy a newer scenic route, compared to the old way along the OHV road and discover a couple more waterfalls along the new trail.
Blue Lakes Trail is worth the drive to the trailhead and leads you on a romantic, yet challenging, 8 mile trek through the Mount Sneffels wilderness to three turquoise blue alpine lakes. One of our all-time favorite hikes in the San Juan Mountains.

Perfect for couples, we love this romantic downtown Telluride studio loft decorated with mountain rustic decor. Sitting just a few blocks from the Chair 7 lift, a short walk to Main Street, and Clark’s Supermarket, you’ll be treated to views of Ballard Mountain and Bear Creek from your own private deck.
The Hotel Telluride is an ideal location in town and offers a complimentary shuttle to the gondola, plus fresh baked cookies and croissants all day long. Other romantic hotels in Telluride include the Inn at Lost Creek, the Madeline Hotel and Residences, and the New Sheridan Hotel.
Best time to go
Visit Telluride between June and August for fun festivals like the Telluride Arts Summer Bazaar and the Telluride Jazz Festival. If you want to enjoy off-roading and hiking with less people, August to October is a good time to roll and walk about.
The aspens are turning to gold across the mountains, starting in mid to late September. Ski season begins around Thanksgiving and typicallly lasts until around April 1.
Steamboat Springs
Why Steamboat is romantic

Avid hikers will love hiking the challenging, worthwhile Zirkel Circle! This is our all time favorite hike in Steamboat Springs. Enjoy two alpine lakes, stunning views of Mount Zirkel, wildflowers galore, creek crossings, cascading waterfalls, and lovely sections through pine forests and aspen groves.
For a much shorter, albeit steep hike, head straight up Hahn’s Peak. You’ll relish the shaded switchbacks through the forest before being rewarded with uncomparable 360 degree views from the famous fire lookout at the tip top of Hahn’s Peak.

Hike in Roxborough State Park, in the hills of Littleton, Colorado. This hidden gem just south of Denver boasts large red granite slabs rising up from grassy meadows. With 14 miles of trails to choose from, super short hikes or some as long as 7 miles, making this park perfect for all types of hikers.
The hike to St. Mary’s Glacier is an easy to moderate, 1.9 mile, out-and-back trail with breathtaking views. You will find hidden waterfalls, a beautiful lake, a small mountain glacier, and mountain vistas along the way. This hiking trail is best used between April and October; I’ve hiked it in May and there was still lots of snow. Pack spikes. The trail to St. Mary’s Glacier is roughly 1 hour west of Denver, in the small town of Alice.

Summer can also be hot in Denver - some days can be known to see temps in the 90s and near 100 in the height of summer.
